Nearly all of us are familiar with dry skin, especially during cold winter season when the environmental humidity level drops down and the skin is exposed to dry winds. But some people are more prone to skin dryness and itchiness than others. Dry skin may affect people of all age groups, irrespective of whether the person has underlying skin symptoms or not. Most likely, people experience dry skin in the hands and lower legs. But it may occur in any part of the body. The skin feels tight, looks pale, reddish and flaky. At times, dry itchy skin patches and cracks accompany intense itching.
The causes for obtaining dry skin fall into the following items: less humidity or dry air is the main cause for drawing moisture out of skin; taking hot water bath for a long time contributes a lot to skin dryness; less water intake, excessive sweating, vomiting and diarrhea can lead to skin dryness and itchiness; frequent washing of hands and legs, or anything that cause exposure to water repeatedly; using harsh soaps and skin cleansing agents; poor diet and lack of some vitamins also play a major role in skin dryness and alike problems; dry skin is also caused due to chronic smoking and side effects of medicines. Dead Sea salt varies greatly from the salt extracted from other seas and oceans, by its mineral composition. Wrinkles around the mouth, or as popularly known as smile lines, indicate the skin has started losing its elasticity. With age, the skin tends to grow thinner and less elastic. It even becomes drier than before. The natural oil that is produced during youth, is produced less as the person ages. This makes the skin go drier with time. All these process end up giving a wrinkled look to the skin.
Apart from aging, there are other factors which add to the effects of aging. The most common of them is exposure to ultraviolet light. UV light destroys the collagen and elastin fibers in the skin, without which the skin starts sagging and wrinkling before time. Wrinkles around the mouth are also common from smoking. Smoking worsens the process of wrinkling by affecting the blood supply to the skin, which in turn, manifests in the form of wrinkles, not only in the facial area, but also in other parts of the body, including the inner arms. One more cause of wrinkles, which may be strange to know, is associated with smiling, squinting and other facial movements and expressions. Rosacea is an unpleasant skin disease, characterized by abnormal redness of the facial skin. It is sometimes called acne rosacea, as the symptoms often include pimple or acne like skin outbreaks.
